With five interceptions on the season safety Erik Smith is an important cog in what has been, statistically, one of the best defenses in recent memory. In the midst of school and practice, Smith talks about winning a league title and prepping for the first round of playoffs.
“Last week we were able to wrap up the regular season with a win over the Grandview Wolves. In preparation for Grandview we had an interesting week due to the cancellations of school from the amount of snow. This shortened our week, limiting the number of practices, although when Friday came....we were ready! Last year Grandview beat us in the last regular season game grasping the Centennial League Championship. This year we turned the tide beating them 21-0. We clinched the Centennial League Championship and capped off our season with a victory as well. Now it's PLAYOFF TIME!!! The regular season records go out the window as everyone starts out at 0-0 in the playoffs. The intensity from week to week is amplified during this time because if you lose you're out. So all the chips are out on the table and in play. We start out with #32 seed Boulder and obtain home advantage during this week. The team prepares for each game with intensity and focus and each of us know that we can never overlook anyone, especially in playoffs.”
Focus seems to be the key word in describing Smith, a senior leader on a Mustang defense that is allowing fewer than five points a game. Last year, the Mullen D was the key component to a state title. Repeats are rare, but Smith and his Mustangs may be up for the task.
