Quietly, over the past two seasons, receiver Shane Opitz has established himself as one of the top receivers in Colorado 4A football. The 6-0 180 pound senior does not wow with measurables, but he always gets the job done.
Last night, while leading his team to a 43-18 win in their league opener against Denver South, Opitz had eight catches for 143 receiving yards. Three of those catches went for touchdowns. Heritage QB Mitch Griebel delivered all night hitting on 15 of 26 passes for 247 yards and the three TDs to Opitz. Griebel also added 60 rush yards as well as an interception on defense.
Although South had a tough time most of the night falling behind 28 to 6 by the end of the first half, there were some bright spots. Senior linebacker Alphonso Campbell registered eight tackles and two sacks. Also keep a look out for freshman Phillip Lindsay who made plays as a runner, returner and receiver.
Opitz, Griebel and crew will have very little time to rest as they take on talented Golden team that is coming off a loss to defending 4A champs Wheat Ridge. South has a chance to get in the win column this week taking on a Green Mountain team that has yet to pick up a win this season.
