Honing Their Skills

Top programs and players prep for season in tough 7 on 7 tournaments.

In case you have not noticed, high school football is a year round endeavor. Top teams, to stay cohesive as well as hone their skills, participate in activities such as weights, team camp, individual camps, conditioning, combines and 7 on 7.  This past week some of Colorado's best programs participated in top 7 on 7 tournaments to up the competition level as season draws closer and closer.

Over the past few years the Battle of the Bayou hosted by Ponderosa High School has become a showcase 7 on 7 in Colorado.  This year's Battle boasted some of Colorado's top teams and players as 5A champ Mullen as well as Grandview, Eaglecrest, Chaparral, Ponderosa, Golden and others competed.  With these teams came very good talent as top QBs Jonny Miller, Ryan Stokes as well as young gun Tom Thornton led their teams.

Miller of Mullen showed the strong arm that brought about multiple D1 offers and eventually a commit to Syracuse, while Thornton of Ponderosa threw 16 TDs on the day against only three pics.  Although Thornton, Miller and others played well, the day belonged to Ryan Stokes of Golden.  The 6-2 signal caller led his 4A squad to the tourney title and received the offensive MVP award.

Down the road at Dakota Ridge High School, the Eagles hosted a 7 on 7 this past week that also pulled in top teams and talent as Dakota Ridge, Fairview, Heritage, Chatfield, Pomona, Poudre, Horizon, Monarch and others.  The championship game of the Dakota Ridge tournament came down to Fairview and Heritage.  When the dust settled on this affair, Kenny Bell and his Knights beat Mitch Griebel and his Eagles in a 21-16 barn burner.

This week, the big boys will get their shot as Heritage High School will once again host one of the best offseason football tournaments, the Hog Olympics.  Events such as the bench, tire throw, truck push and tug of war will be part of this great competition.
