When it comes to speed and skill players, Denver South has more than it share of talent. In fact, South head coach Tony Lindsay may not have enough footballs. At the top of the skill player list is versatile receiver Jevon Reynolds, who has gained the attention of numerous D1 programs, but Reynolds is not the only South player that has and can make the big play. QB Derek Robinson passed for over 2,000 yards, Denzel Walker rushed for just under 600 yards and utility man Turmour Battle averaged 8 yards a carry. Of this group, Battle may be the most dangerous. The 5-10 170 pound Battle has the kind of quickness that makes opposing defenders quiver. A threat to break on every play, Battle can change directions and gets to top speed in a couple of steps. Battle augments his importance to the squad with his ability to return kicks.
Along with his skills on offense and as kick returner, Battle, the cousin of former Big 12 and pro cornerback Dyshod Carter, is also a defensive back. As a corner, Battle has good speed, flexible hips and ball skills. An extra bonus to his game is his ability to hold the edge against the run game. Battle is a physical tackler and plays bigger than his 170 pounds.
Last season, Denver South took a step up and went 7-4. This upcoming season with the number of big play performers the Rebels have, South could well make some noise in the new West Metro League. That task will not be easy though as the West Metro will have Dakota Ridge, Wheat Ridge, Green Mountain and Heritage all ready to get after it in the new league.
