Week 6 Friday Night Phenoms

Air Academy duo Brennan Price and Bob Terry lead Air Academy to 6-0 and are just two of the athletes featured in this week’s edition of Phenoms.

You have to love kickers.  Wild, weird, quirky kickers.  Big, fast, powerful athletes bang it out week in and week out on fields from the NFL to high school and then turn it over to some guy from Bratislava or Buenos Aires to get a kick and win the game.  Although not hailing from overseas, two Colorado prep kickers had big nights in wins this week.  Sophomore Kip Smith of Legacy High School, wearing his lucky bright yellow shoes, hit on field goals of 27, 37, 51 and 48 to help Legacy fend off league foe Fort Collins 19-6 Thursday night.  Friday night, in the big Heritage win over Douglas County, kicker Kyle Major limped on the sideline, but showed a stout leg on the field as he hit field goals of 31, 29 and 56 yards!

Someone with a phenom like ability to heal is Greeley West QB Rex Morgan.  Morgan, who dislocated his hip, only missed two games and looked no worse for the wear in a 27-0 win against Skyline.

A name that has not been mentioned enough this year in the Phenoms, is that of Grandview back Bo Bolen.  Early in the season, by Grandview standards, the Wolves struggled but recently they have gotten things right, no one more so than Bolen.  Friday in a 52-31 win over Overland, Bolen averaged 11 yards per carry on the way to 265 rushing yards and three scores.  With the win, Grandview moves to 3-1 in the always tough Centennial League.  Another back that once again had a big evening was Devon Fitzgerald of Thomas Jefferson.  Fitzgerald had runs of 73 and 59 on the way to over 200 rush yards.  On the season, Fitzgerald is averaging over 150 yards rushing a game.

Cody and Cory sound like a new duo on the Disney channel but actually they are Ralston Valley kick returners Cody Schafer and Cody Roberts.  The pair each had 90 yard kick returns in Ralston Valley’s 45-19 drubbing of Green Mountain.

With a win over Rampart, the Air Academy Kadets pushed the record to 6-0.  In the win, QB Brennan Price and RB Bob Terry combined for 265 yards rushing.  For good measure, Terry had four scores and Price went six of seven for 64 passing yards.

Speaking of dynamic duos, Roman Holmes and DeVaughn Levy of Cherry Creek combined for 250 yards rushing in the 35-14 win over Boulder.  Holmes was very impressive averaging 17 yards a carry and three scores.

Grand Junction QB Russ Koepsell needed every yard and every score to help his team hold off Fruita-Monument and win 33-27.  Koepsell had a career game throwing for nearly 300 yards and three scores while rushing for 110 yards and two scores.
