With the champs all crowned we put this year’s edition of Phenoms to rest as next year’s crop of playmakers move on to other sports and begin their preparation for the 2014 football season. So here is a look at the players who helped bring home titles.
Christian McCaffrey finished what may be one of the greatest careers in Colorado high school history. As talented as Valor is, it is hard to imagine they would have won four straight titles if he was not in the fold. In the 5A championship win over Fairview McCaffrey posted over 220 yards of offense and scored four times. Further, McCaffrey has played so well, so long he makes the extraordinary look ordinary. During this year’s playoff run McCaffrey averaged 291 all purpose yards a game and scored 21 touchdowns. All this while playing timely defense and serving as Valor’s punter. WOW!
In a losing cause Fairview receiver Sam Martin had 129 receiving yards against the state’s best defensive secondary.
In the 4A final Pine Creek dominated Montrose 49-14 giving the Eagles their first state title. Very much a football team, Pine Creek had multiple impact players but special attention goes to an offensive line that helped pound out over 330 rush yards against a good Montrose defense.
In 3A Cinderella wears the slipper as Coronado, defeated defending state champ Silver Creek in an exciting come from behind 28-24 victory. Multiple heroes were needed for Coronado to come back from an early 17-0 deficit, but the phenom here is Cougar Head Coach Bobby Lizarraga. In the previous two seasons Coronado was a combined 5-15. Despite a solid talent base instilling a championship attitude could not have been an easy task. Congrats!
