Over the past few seasons Grand Junction High School has established itself as one of the better programs in Colorado High School football. One of the keys to this recent success is talented players, many of whom have signed with college programs after their time as Tigers. Currently one of Grand Junction's more intriguing prospects, and a player to watch in Colorado for the class of 2014, is DE/FB Theron Verna.
Verna, who stands 6-3 and weighs 240 pounds, is equally effective on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Running 4.8 and benching 375 pounds to go with a 500 plus pound squat, Verna is a devastating blocker on offense and tough against the run on defense.
Verna is receiving early interest from multiple mid major and FCS programs including Wyoming, South Dakota State and Montana State. The explosive two way player is getting looks on both sides of the ball, but he says, I honestly enjoy both fullback and defensive end, but if I had to choose I would say fullback."
So far this offseason Verna is hitting the weights hard and doing speed training with his team. With the graduation of linemen Austin Berk and James Diamante, both of whom opted for Mountain West programs, Verna will shoulder a greater responsibility for the Tiger defensive front in 2013.
