Earlier this week PrepColorado posted its 2014 Watch List for receivers. The list highlighted numerous talented receivers with the potential to play college football. A key attribute regarding the 2014 class of wideouts was size, with multiple players measuring in the 6-2 range. Towering above this group is 2014 Gateway receiver Anthony Holmes. Standing 6-6 and weighing 195 pounds, Holmes naturally gains attention, often being the tallest player on the field, add in his athletic talent and Holmes is a player to watch.
Gateway, historically a doormat in Colorado 5A football, is potentially off to its best start ever having won two games in a row by a combined 68-7. Boasting numerous returning starters including QB Tate Johnson and CSU commit Zach Golditch, Holmes has no pressure to put games on his big shoulders with the comfort of an experienced QB. Friday evening, in the win over Northglenn, Holmes came into his own making four catches for 135 yards and two TDs. Holmes size was too much for an outmatched Northglenn secondary.
A multi sport athlete, Holmes is a standout on the Gateway basketball team, averaging nine points a game as a sophomore. Next week both Gateway and Holmes will be tested as they take on a Cherokee Trail squad that is 2-0 and bolstered by a talented secondary. The towering Holmes is easy to find and if his numbers continue to shine, expect the 2014 receiver to gain increased recruiting attention.
