A blocked field goal late in the game kept Mullen from tying Columbine as the Rebels held on to defeat the defending 5A champs 24-21 to win the Big 6 Conference title. Senior RB Cameron McDondle led a Columbine ground attack that accounted for 305 rush yards. While churning out yards, the Rebels were able to eat clock limiting touches for the talented Mullen O.
The win should secure Columbine a top seed in the upcoming 5A playoffs.
Cheyenne Mountain 49 Mesa Ridge 28
Cheyenne Mountain shifted from its aerial assault to a ground attack to defeat Mesa Ridge 49-28 Friday night. Running backs Ryan McMahon and James Michael Sullivan combined for six scores. Sullivan added 132 rush yards in the win.
Grand Junction 41 Durango 6
5A power Grand Junction handled home standing 4A Durango 41-6. Tiger QB Sean Rubalcaba threw for over 200 first half yards. The win secures Grand Junction a perfect regular season record as they await their upcoming playoff seed.
Arvada West 22 Boulder 18
Arvada West, traditionally a top team in 5A, was able to gain its first victory of the season as they compiled 232 rush yards in a 22-18 win against a Boulder squad struggling through a tough season.
Ralston Valley 14 Fairview 6
A herd of Ralston Valley backs combined for over 200 rush yards while the defense limited a mistake prone Fairview squad. With the win Ralston Valley rebounds after a loss to Pomona.
Around the State
Pomona made a bid for a strong seed in the upcoming playoffs with a 40-7 win over Legacy. Since their week four loss to Valor Christian Pomona has only allowed 35 points.
With a solid 30-0 win Friday night against Mountain Range, Horizon put the cap on an regular season that saw them win eight straight after a week one loss to Ralston Valley.
Chaparral won its third straight game with 40-0 pasting of Mountain Vista. Over the past three weeks Chaparral has outscored opponents 117-0.
Friday night Wheat Ridge won its sixth straight having scored, on average, over 40 points a game in the win. Monarch, currently unbeaten, took care Green Mountain 42-0, setting up a great finale as Monarch hosts the Farmers next weekend.
Widefield, a 35-33 winner over Pueblo West Friday night, has won eight straight. The win sets up an interesting 4A finale in the Springs as 8-1 Cheyenne Mountain comes down the hill to take on Widefield.
