After a scoreless first quarter, Valor Christian opened up the offense in the second quarter scoring three times. In the second quarter a George Talanoa four yard run and two Brock Berglund TD passes allowed the Eagles to never look back as they won the 4A state title 38-8 in their first year in the classification.
In the second half Valor Christian added a 31 yard field goal, a 75 yard touchdown reception and run from Christian McCaffery and a 24 yard Berglund scramble and score to post 38 points.
Corralled by a tenacious Valor defense Wheat Ridge could only manage an early fourth quarter score as QB Nick Ossello dove in from one yard out. In the first half Ossello, who rushed for over 1,400 yards this season, could only manage 15 yards on eleven carries.
The win, the second state championship for Valor Christian in as many years, was textbook Eagle football. Berglund, using his arm and legs had a hand in every touchdown while the Valor D allowed nothing. Linebacker AJ Isenberg was all over the field getting a piece of what seemed to be every stop. Up front, defensive linemen Stanley Gilbert and Javaughn Johnson brutalized the Wheat Ridge offensive line allowing no push and little run game.
Both Valor Christian and Wheat Ridge are accustomed to title games and it is not a stretch to predict that both will again see a shot at a championship come their way.
